A Word to a Politician

A change promised, on knees and pleas
Asking and announcing a dreamy dawn
With words that soothed a troubled terror
And our unthinking hearts ruled the mind
Trusting a chance and a courage of will
Unable not to hope in a penitent politician

Speak not with smiles, but ask our fate
A sorrowful state unshelled in shackles
Staggering a self-pity, in change’s name
Our heads reeled, stunned by your clout
Unable to conceive meaning, forgive us
But do ask us, once only, our aspirations

Reality has eclipsed our obscured dreams
How can we tap a dance to a tune offbeat?
Our senses insensated by your insensitivity
If we knew, that a sun’s shine could fade
A river’s flow stilled and distilled as drink
Served as wine for dinner, a party rather?

The gluttony of power, a blinding light
Did cast darkness over your grand vision
Our wounds and aches you did not bear
The woes we sanctified you to eradicate
Our ignorance, your sanctuary of strength
Your intent, worse than our feared fears

Again, you come, to seek and to receive
Our faithfulness, a pledge of our sanity
On a warm day, when a charcoal glows
And a vulture circles above your highness
Asserting your feats in feasts of fulfilment
With specious stories to alter our attitudes

Our hearts’ been punctured in two places
Thus our unflinching wits weave our views
Dispelling the twists and suspense of logic
Our thoughts think and we discern a dawn
We seek a frank reality, not your imaginings
Too long, a perfect lie lived in our name

We cannot visualize your vision, you didn’t
We witnessed your antics, our eyes and ears
Your pomp unmasked in fresh dainty daisies
Demanding the annals to spell you a tribute
The cock crowed at noon, have you heard?
As presaged by the fetish of mumbled words

How soon a sun sets, the twilight has come
We, mere spectators have become judges
Unlike you, we are incorrupt and fairly fair
You are flabby and ailing, what can you offer?
Your image depicts an apology and regret
Sadly sloshed beside stinking shades of frolics

Failed, is a slighted word for your reign
Your ego forth all the differing opinions
Our yearnings and your vision run parallel
Like Achilles, fighting for King Agamemnon
What are we without you? A flawed flock?
Take a rest; stand in the shade and observe

women of the night

Along the street, as a shelf displayed
Like royal palm decorating a driveway
Line the wined ‘women of the night’
In clothes and colours, merrily scented
Offering services that fouls our morals
It reeks of fornication and adultery

In smiles and tears, they work the night
A service to men and their drank egos
Like slaves and subjects, they respond
Performing acts to satisfy selfish delights
With groans that mocked their dignity
Driven by poverty, pimps and pleasure

Men hallow their touches at night
Merrily whispering desires and fantasies
And moaning the regrets of a caged love
They listen, all unheard in the wanton air
To the sorrowing beats of bleeding hearts
To secrets, of men sick with affectations

And yet, we call them names with disgust
They, who comfort fathers and husbands,
And out of respect, vault their secrets
They who rest in the day like vampires
For fear our faces will bring out secrets
Why suffer the ‘women of the night’?

We shamefully behold them as strangers
Taunting their dreams with sexual epithets
Doused in a dirge cursed with weariness
Short is memory, ‘women of the night’
We’ve forgotten that thou art family
Once, you were sisters and mothers

Your pride plunges into a maddening cry
Breathing laments softly in your hearts
And anguish bellows deep in your bellies
With screams of ‘whys’ directed at fate
For your critics are clients and customers
Who demonise your image in the day

a facebook

In the cracks of the virtual world
A facebook was dreamed and born
Designed as a socialite platform
It creaked as it made its appearance

A new media and an interface
It merged family, friends and foes
With daily thoughts and experiences
A beauty of diversity on display

Invites, requests and suggestions
Games, causes, photos and notes
All together, they ebbed and flowed
At the touch and click of a mouse

A modern interaction has morphed
With events, reminders and highlights
A pastime, a mania and an obsession
Where feelings and comments come alive

Facebook, a virtual book of faces
Where friendships are resurrected
With applications to chat and to share
A mirage of ourselves and our lives

joyfulness

Harnessed in our sentiments
An artful feeling of bliss resides
Shrouded in an angelic temper
It tenaciously motivates our deeds

In its wake, it insightfully inspires
Nursing a bountiful desire to love
Every essence and every character
And sharing it in smiles and in laughs

The mind spools in lovely thoughts
Invoking compassion in the heart
It is joy, the pinnacle of happiness
Where we enjoy the delights of life

a hope for hope

Growing up, I hoped for hope
Perfected in assenting eagerness
With a desire to control hope

I did hope for love
to choose my cares and laughs
as a soothing balm for my heart

I did hope for freedom
to run wild and fast with the wind
floating on the edges of the breeze

I did hope for maturity
to band all peoples as one family
in kindred and comradeship

I did hope for health
to bask in the sun till the dusk
defying age and illnesses

I did hope for truth
to harness humanity’s heights
converting it into love and affection

And I did hope for life
to live heartily and forever
an eternal paradise on earth

It was the hope that I hoped for
And it still flourish in my heart
Soon, that hope shall be mine

an audible silence

I witnessed silence, louder than thunder
Reign over a city and nation and people
Where resonance echoed a pin’s drop
And breaths paused, fearful of being heard

A dawn charred with chary and wary
Whispering murmurs of dissatisfaction
The hearts hardened with appreciation
Rumbling a silence louder than thunder

In a past, they opted for soundlessness
O’er taunts and tattles and hearsays
They’d walk beyond in search of solace
Yeasted by hurts and provoked slurs

A string of disillusions has been broken
Echoing from moments and times past
Broken promises and disappointments
With vested authority and with society

Within the family and amongst friends
Perceptions and assumptions solidified
Inciting malice and derogatory thoughts
A verdict inspired by repulsive rumours

The trees quieten as edginess uncloaked
The silence ricocheting from the valleys
Has ascended clouds, summoning panic
And a tombstone, it erected for apathy

Full to the brim, silence has turned rebel
With an attitude and an act of anxiety
Itself ready for conflict and commotion
None is as frightful as an audible silence

the eyes and a soul

Eyes, sullen and sunken stared at me
Never once did it stir, nor sparkle
A hardened look, it softened statues
Its gaze, passionately into my soul

The gaze projects an image of intents
Like the fiery angels in Eden’s garden
Penetrated deeper than depth’s deep
Making thoughts display its best deeds

Eyes, fairer and bluer than sapphire
Sits ahigh a throne, watching alertly
Divulging an awareness of bewareness
In savoury severity, it stripped nudity

The soul flinched in apprehension
Because, nothing hid from the eyes
The simplest manner to unearth truth
I learned a moment, is an incisive stare

Knowledge of beauty, given by sight
Was taught a soul, visualising wonder
And appreciating self-consciousness
Subjective, yet immobilising the view

a smile

A feature of the face, infecting
Our thoughts, words and deeds
Faster and quicker than contagious
More recognisable than celebrity
A love’s desire and laughter's laugh
Hope’s trust and optimism’s wealth
A smile, tis called, attraction’s appeal
Tis it that makes a face beautiful

Its lure, more mesmeric than magnet
Mulling over satisfaction with glee
Has ensnared happiness in its bosom
Affably inviting the afflicted and all
Into a pleasantly compassionate cult
Arms wide open and a heartful heart
A curled lip, glittery eyes and warmth
To hug, cuddle and soothe ourselves

anansesem

Under the shade of the mango tree
A fire lit to idle away time’s moment
Beneath the shadows of a sunny dusk
Seated in a bend shape of a setting sun

All hearts and ears, a tale to be told
Of Kweku Ananse, the great spider man
A hero and villain, a loser and winner
A man and an insect and a character

His frolics – shrewdness and foolishness
It made us howl and cry and we laughed
His charisma – mesmeric and repulsive
Revealed weakness and strengthened us

Anansesem, stories of our forefathers
To teach and entertain and inspire us
To affect and persuade and indoctrinate
To birth greatness and cause actions

Anansesem, the great tales of Ananse
An interpretation of life and harmony
A plateau of goodness and a beauty
Our history and ancestry incorporated

good day

I’m encroaching upon your day

Not with aflowers, nor candies

But with the best of intentions

With wishes of peace and harmony

Of good health and prosperity

To fill your hearts with joy and love

Today, unlike the ones before

Was designed especially for you–

Tenuously, she desires your signature

Your dreams, her obligation to fulfil

A basketful of wishes and fantasies

A genie bottle, her present for you

Through kindred and of humanity

She allures your imagination

Beckoning you to unleash prowess

To create that paradise in your head

To live was the object of your birth

The best is in you, have a good day

thank you

A thank you, is not enough,

To describe the appreciation,

Of your thoughts, efforts and actions,

Taken in my favour and for me.

A thank you, is my way,

My gesture of recognition,

Of the beholden state I find myself,

The joy you brought to my heart.

my imagination

An array of scenes, objects and worlds
Transcending light and time, in and out
Of the past, present and the future
As shadows, pictures, and then reality
Images created, cracked and changed
The footprints of a causal theory manifest

To visualize the unseen, beneath dreams
Encompassing forms and formless sketches
Predicting a new world to augment the old
A destination, I have not, but a will to be
Celebrating uncensored self-expressiveness
Breastfed by my attitude, evolving from it

Imagination, a gem that colours the mind
An inspired thought, filled with all
Possibilities, unreasonably unrealistic dreams
It gives me wings to fly over boundless lands
Therein, my world view is perceived
A new found job, a co-creator with God

My imagination, a self protective apparatus
Constantly churning visions and fantasies
That captures and contains life – optimism
Living my tomorrow in an illusionary mode
To suit me, my tastes and preferences
Nurtured and with a tendency to grow

My imagination, idealism versus realism
One proposes and the other disposes
A homely aphorism and a fabled system
Adjacent tenants, a contest of equals
Images and depictions, issues and events
Manifested in a cherished dream, I relish
